In late September 2026, police in Essen launched a manhunt for a 19-year-old Algerian citizen following a violent assault in the city’s North Quarter. The suspect reportedly beat and kicked a 30-year-old man, causing a “massive head injury” that left the victim in life-threatening condition. The suspect fled the scene and remained at large. On October 3, 2026, a separate violent incident occurred in Lippstadt, where a 21-year-old man was seriously injured in a knife attack. The victim and a companion were reportedly followed and insulted by two men before the victim was beaten and stabbed in the back. After being stabbed, the victim was airlifted to a clinic in Dortmund, where an emergency operation saved his life. While one suspect matching a description was detained near the scene, briefly detained, authorities established a homicide commission to continue the search for a second suspect.
