Authorities in South America have reported and investigated several violent crimes targeting women. In Rosario, Argentina, a 37-year-old former police officer, Eliel Gerónimo Noel Schiffo, was arrested following the discovery of 26-year-old Bárbara Camila Aragón’s body inside a suitcase. Aragón, a sex worker from Villa Gobernador Gálvez, was found wrapped in a blanket inside a kitchen area of a boarding house on Juan José Paso street after being reported missing. Investigators were directed to the scene following testimony from a ride-share driver who had transported Aragón to the location and subsequently received a message from her requesting a return trip. Preliminary autopsy results indicate the cause of death was asphyxiation, with no other signs of violence detected. Schiffo, who was previously dismissed from the Santa Fe police force due to a 2021 narcotics trafficking conviction, is the primary suspect. Investigators state that Schiffo allegedly killed the victim following a dispute regarding payment for services. The case is being handled by the Unidad de Violencias Altamente Lesivas under prosecutor Marina Bertolotti, who is overseeing the forensic analysis of a seized mobile phone to reconstruct the victim’s final hours. The case is being treated as a qualified homicide by femicide. In Colombia, a man was imprisoned for the murder of his partner after investigators utilized security camera footage to identify him. Additionally, in Chile, a man was placed in pretrial detention for allegedly attempting to asphyxiate his pregnant partner and issuing death threats against her and her family.
