Violent crime incidents and mob violence in Bangladesh and India

Reports from Bangladesh indicate several instances of severe domestic and sexual violence. In Bhola, a man was detained following an alleged acid attack on his wife, reportedly motivated by dowry disputes. In Rajshahi, a man was taken into custody after killing his mother and injuring his father during a dispute. In Sreepur, a woman was allegedly raped near a warehouse, an incident that led to a subsequent suicide attempt where her child was critically injured. While these reports focus on Bangladesh, related reports of violent sexual assault and murder also emerged from Lucknow, India. Recent developments suggest a surge in violent crimes, fueling public anxiety regarding safety and the protection of minorities. In the Mymensingh district, the body of Niranjan Chandra Sutradhar, a 50-year-old Hindu jewellery shop owner, was found in a floating plastic drum near a sluice gate. Investigators noted injuries to his head and chest, suggesting murder, though no suspects have been detained. Concerns regarding child safety have also intensified following the murder of 13-year-old Ishiat Shahriar Opratim in the Cumilla district and the deaths of three children from a single family in Tahirpur upazila, Sunamganj. These incidents, alongside reports of abductions and sexual abuse, have led to public criticism of the government’s ability to maintain domestic security. Further reports indicate a rise in mob violence and lawlessness following the July 2024 political uprising. Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) documented the use of mobs to press demands during the interim government period, a trend that has reportedly continued under the BNP-led government following the February 2026 elections. Human rights organization Ain ‘o Salish Kendra (ASK) documented that at least 154 people were beaten to death in mob violence across the country between January and August 2026.
