Researchers from Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein conducted a comprehensive review of 200 scientific papers involving over 14.5 million people to map viral hepatitis trends in Brazil. The study, published in PLOS ONE, aims to support the World Health Organization’s goal of eliminating viral hepatitis by 2030.
Initial findings highlighted a resurgence of hepatitis A linked to oral-anal sexual contact and noted regional variations, such as higher hepatitis A incidence in the Amazon, North, and Northeast. The research emphasized that vaccination remains the primary preventive measure.
Subsequent analysis of the data raised concerns regarding the underdiagnosis of hepatitis D and E. While hepatitis A, B, and C are more widely recognized, hepatitis D prevalence exceeded 20% in the Amazon region in some studies, and hepatitis E reached rates of up to 59% in parts of the South. Coordinator João Renato Rebello Pinho noted that these less common forms may not be correctly diagnosed because they are often not “within the standard radar of clinical practice.”
