Social media platforms in Japan continue to see a surge in viral pet content, ranging from heartwarming interactions to humorous facial expressions. Feline trends remain prominent. A video of a cat named Ginji has garnered over 2.5 million views and 140,000 likes on X for its “banzai” motion when its belly is tickled. Additionally, a photo by Yuzen artist Kana Mizuno of a cat watching over a napping infant on a tatami mat earned 59,000 likes, with viewers noting the pet’s “protective aura”. More recently, cats visiting veterinary clinics have gone viral due to their dramatic reactions; Ururi gained attention for a “rebellious” look on a vaccination certificate, while Koma’s wide-eyed, serious expression in a carrier earned over 190,000 likes. Taro, a black-and-white cat, also drew attention for attempting to escape a carrier bag by poking its face through the opening. Other notable feline trends include Kyo-chan, who became a topic of discussion for slowly peeking from behind a microwave door, and Hideyoshi, a YouTube star known for using its face to push open doors to reach its owner, a behavior compared to a “dog’s responsiveness”. Newer trends include a kitten named Choco, whose surprised reaction to its own tail on Threads garnered over 170,000 views, and a tabby named Tanu, whose fur created an unusual shape while sliding a door, leading to comparisons to a “large hairball or a raccoon”. A Norwegian Forest Cat named Uru-chan also gained attention on TikTok for standing on its hind legs like a “lady holding her skirt”. Interactions between pets and infants remain popular, such as a photo of a sleeping baby contrasted with energetic Siberian Huskies and a Threads post where a 7kg cat occupied a baby’s mat, leaving the infant to sleep on the carpet.
