Religious festivities for the Virgen de El Cisne began with a nautical procession in Puerto Bolívar, where over one hundred vessels accompanied the image through the Huaylá estuary. During this event, residents offered prayers for peace, security, and economic improvement. As the major pilgrimage approached, preparations in Loja included infrastructure maintenance to manage the influx of thousands of pilgrims. The pilgrimage, held under the theme ‘María, Reina de la Paz’, saw the religious image arrive in Catamayo on Tuesday, August 18, 2026. There, it was received by local authorities and thousands of devotees under clear skies. During the journey, devotees presented new symbolic garments for the image, including a yellow and violet outfit representing Christ as the heart of faith and a plea for protection against natural disasters. To facilitate the Romería, President Daniel Noboa issued Executive Decree 475, suspending the workday in the Loja province on August 20, 2026. The decree was designed to encourage participation, ensure orderly mobility, and assist security forces. While essential services like health, electricity, water, and banking remain operational with minimum personnel, local authorities implemented transit diversions to prioritize pedestrian movement. Under the decree, public sector employees must recover suspended hours on subsequent workdays, while private sector employers may establish internal agreements with staff. To manage the logistics of the pilgrimage, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport announced road closures, specifically affecting the Catamayo–San Pedro de la Bendita and Catamayo–Loja routes. Additionally, more than 700 police officers have been deployed to maintain security throughout the procession. Following the pilgrimage, the ‘Noches del Peregrino’ festivities are scheduled from September 1 to 8, 2026, outside the Cathedral church. The program features religious and cultural activities, including dances, music, and ‘castillos’ fireworks displays.
