Virginia State University shooting and subsequent arrests

A shooting occurred near the Quad Annexes residential area at Virginia State University in Ettrick, Virginia, around 1:30 a.m. on a Saturday morning. The incident left five people wounded, with victims aged between 17 and 23. One victim, a student, has since been released from the hospital, while a 21-year-old man remains in critical condition. The other four victims sustained non-life-threatening injuries. Following the gunfire, authorities arrested 19-year-old Camron Harris of Henrico, Virginia, after he was found hiding in a dormitory closet more than 14 hours after the incident. Harris, who is not a student at the university, is being held without bond at the Chesterfield County Jail and faces eight felony warrants, including four counts of malicious wounding and four counts of using a firearm in the commission of a felony. In a recent development, Virginia State University student Ja’niah Johnson has been charged with misdemeanor accessory after the fact. Police allege that Johnson assisted Harris in evading authorities by hiding him in a closet within her dorm room at Steward Hall. As investigations continue, authorities are searching for additional individuals who may have been involved in the gunfire. Investigators from the Chesterfield County Police Department’s Major Crimes Unit are working alongside the ATF and the Hanover County Sheriff’s Office to determine the circumstances of the event and whether other participants acted in self-defense or as aggressors. Virginia State University, a historically Black university (HBCU), has stated that classes will proceed as scheduled. University President Makola Abdullah confirmed the institution is cooperating with local, state, and federal law enforcement, noting that an “increased police presence will remain on campus” during the ongoing investigation.
