The municipality of Viseu has moved to implement free public transportation for its residents. Initially, the municipality announced that starting September 1, public transport would be free for residents aged 24 and older, complementing existing national policies for youth and veterans. This measure covers the Mobilidade Urbana de Viseu (MUV) network, specific STUV lines, and the Mobi Viseu Dão Lafões network for travel within the municipality. Following this, the policy was expanded to provide free public transportation for all residents. Supported by President João Azevedo, the initiative aims to improve quality of life, reduce family living costs, decrease traffic congestion, and lower environmental emissions. The move occurs amid a broader national trend in Portugal toward subsidizing or providing free public transport, though some critics suggest that network coverage must improve alongside price reductions. Since the implementation began in early September, the local government has used the measure to combat rising fuel costs and encourage citizens to reduce car usage. The program requires residents to use the ‘Passe Residente Viseu’, which involves an initial 5 euro fee for card issuance. The initiative has seen a rapid uptake; in less than two weeks, approximately 3,500 new free passes were issued, representing a fourfold increase in demand compared to usual levels.
