Vivaxin malaria vaccine clinical trials in Brazil

Overview

Brazil’s National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) has authorized Phase 1 human clinical trials for Vivaxin, a vaccine candidate designed to combat the Plasmodium vivax malaria parasite. Unlike existing vaccines that target the Plasmodium falciparum strain predominant in Africa, Vivaxin targets the strain most prevalent in Asia and the Americas.

Developed using 100% Brazilian technology, the vaccine is the result of a partnership involving the Vaccine Technology Center (CTVacinas) at the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG), the University of São Paulo (USP), and the pharmaceutical laboratory Cristália. To support the full progression of Phase I, II, and III trials, the Brazilian Ministry of Health has allocated R$ 12 million.

The initial Phase 1 study will take place at the Hospital das Clínicas at UFMG in Belo Horizonte. The trial will involve 48 healthy volunteers between the ages of 18 and 59 who have no prior history of malaria. Using a double-blind protocol where participants receive either the vaccine or a placebo, researchers will monitor participants for 360 days to assess the vaccine’s safety, potential adverse reactions, and immune response stimulation.

This development is considered a significant milestone for public health, particularly given that Brazil recorded 118,037 malaria cases in 2025.
