The legal proceedings regarding the Volkswagen diesel emissions scandal at the Braunschweig Regional Court have seen significant developments. Following previous delays caused by a 66-year-old former executive failing to appear due to health reasons, the court has issued an arrest warrant for the defendant. The individual was detained after the second day of proceedings to ensure the trial continues, as the presiding judge had rejected the defendant’s medical documentation as insufficient. The trial, which involves allegations of participating in the development of illegal defeat devices or failing to act against their use, is expected to last approximately 150 days through 2028. In a separate legal matter, the Braunschweig Labor Court has ordered Volkswagen to pay a former manager approximately 300,000 euros in back wages. This follows a September ruling where another manager was awarded roughly 200,000 euros. These disputes involve the termination of two high-level managers who allegedly leaked internal revision reports concerning Crafter and Grand California models to authorities and the media. While Volkswagen characterized these actions as a “massive breach of duty,” the managers have invoked whistleblower protection laws, claiming they faced pressure after reporting internal irregularities. In the most recent ruling regarding the back wages, the court determined that while the summary dismissals were not timely, it upheld the validity of the standard terminations.
