Volvo Cars economic and market challenges
Overview
Volvo CEO Håkan Samuelsson previously warned that the European automotive industry faces risks similar to the economic erosion seen in Detroit. Following these warnings, Volvo Cars withdrew its annual sales and cash flow targets, reporting an 11 percent year-on-year decline in third-quarter sales driven by a 40 percent drop in China and a 14 percent decrease in the Americas.
In a subsequent update, the company issued a profit warning and officially withdrew its full-year 2026 guidance for sales volumes and cash flow. Global sales for the third quarter fell by 10.7 percent to approximately 141,609 units. To address financial pressure, Volvo is implementing measures to accelerate its strategic roadmap and announced that Klaus Zellmer will succeed Samuelsson as CEO by October 2027.
Recent data reveals a significant shift in powertrain demand amidst the sales slump. While deliveries of internal combustion and mild hybrid vehicles dropped by 23.6 percent, electrified vehicles—including battery electric (BEV) and plug-in hybrids (PHEV)—grew by 4.6 percent, now accounting for 53 percent of total sales. In China, electrified sales grew by 25 percent even as traditional engine sales plummeted by 52 percent, while BEV deliveries in Europe saw a 51 percent increase.
Simultaneously, Volvo is advancing industrial expansion in Slovakia. The Košice plant has reached a milestone of 1,000 employees and has begun its first work shifts. The facility, which aims to produce 250,000 electric vehicles annually, is currently in testing operations and expects to begin commercial production of ‘made in Slovakia’ vehicles within several months.
