Volvo Safety Coach application and connected safety technology launch
Volvo Cars has introduced ‘Safety Coach’, an optional application developed in collaboration with Cambridge Mobile Telematics. The tool utilizes artificial intelligence and telematics to monitor driving behaviors such as braking, acceleration, cornering, and speed to generate a safety score. Designed to increase road predictability and prevent accidents, the system provides real-time feedback via the vehicle’s infotainment screen and a smartphone app. Mikael Ljung Aust, a driving behavior expert at Volvo, noted that the tool aims to increase predictability on the road to help prevent accidents caused by sudden or unexpected maneuvers. The initial rollout targets models from 2020 onwards in Sweden and Norway. In these regions, drivers who share their data may be eligible for insurance discounts through Volvia. Volvia, shifting toward a usage-based insurance model that rewards individual cautious driving. Volvo intends to expand the service to the United States and other European markets in the future. In a broader expansion of connected safety technology, Volvo is also implementing over-the-air software updates for models including the EX60, EX90, and ES90. These updates introduce four real-time road hazard alerts: large animal detection, vulnerable user alerts (pedestrians and cyclists), roadwork notifications, and accident warnings. This technology enables vehicles to share hazard information in real time with other drivers, other car brands, and traffic management centers via the European Data for Road Safety ecosystem.
