Czech tennis champion Markéta Vondroušová, the 2023 Wimbledon winner, received a four-year suspension from the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) following her refusal of an out-of-competition anti-doping test at her Prague home on 3 December 2025. The test was requested at 20:05, outside the 60-minute window the athlete had previously declared. Vondroušová argued that the refusal was due to an acute stress reaction and safety concerns, citing the 2016 attack on fellow Czech player Petra Kvitová as a reason for her anxiety regarding strangers at her door. She also claimed the official did not clearly identify themselves. However, an independent tribunal rejected these explanations, stating they provided ‘no compelling justification’ and noting she had taken her dog for a walk shortly after the incident. The tribunal found she remained capable of rational decision-making. In addition to the refusal, the ITIA reported vulgar communications from the player, including a message to her agent, Andrew Paulson, describing the officer as ‘a stupid [person] from doping’. The four-year ban, effective from 22 June 2026 to 21 June 2030, remains in force despite subsequent negative tests in December 2025 and May 2026. Vondroušová has since appealed the decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). CAS has confirmed receipt of the appeal, though a hearing date has not yet been scheduled. Vondroušová has maintained her innocence, stating she has ‘never doped’. As of August 2026, the former world number six has not competed since January, and her ranking has dropped to 153. Legal analysts suggest her defense may attempt to reclassify the incident as a negligent failure rather than a voluntary refusal to seek a reduced sentence, or argue that her actions were a manifestation of a clinical condition rather than a deliberate attempt to evade rules.
