Group C of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations began with two markedly different outcomes. On 28 July debutants Malawi shocked defending champions Nigeria 3‑2 at Al Madina Stadium in Rabat, Morocco. Temwa Chawinga gave Malawi the lead in the 73rd minute and added a stoppage‑time goal, with her sister Tabitha Chawinga scoring the other. Nigeria rallied late through a Rasheedat Ajibade penalty and a strike by Uchenna Kanu, but could not overturn the deficit, leaving Nigeria needing a win over Zambia to stay alive. Two days later Zambia routed Egypt 6‑0, highlighted by Barbra Banda’s four‑goal haul, and finished the opening round atop the group. The results left same opening round also produced victories for Ghana and Cameroon in Group D, emphasising a tournament-wide surge of unexpected results.
