Wales railway infrastructure and safety developments
Overview
Network Rail has announced a £25 million infrastructure upgrade for the North Wales Coast railway line between Chester and Holyhead. Described as a “once-in-a-generation” programme, the project aims to improve reliability, capacity, and safety by renewing infrastructure that has been in place for over 50 years. The work will involve a four-week closure from January 9 to February 6, 2027, including track renewal at the Conwy Tubular Railway Bridge and drainage improvements in the Bodorgan Tunnel.
In conjunction with these developments, the Welsh Government has requested that the UK Government accelerate rail funding, with Finance Minister Elin Jones asking for £1 billion of existing rail investment commitments to be brought forward to support Welsh projects.
Efforts regarding Welsh rail have also expanded to include safety initiatives on the Cambrian Line. British Transport Police, Network Rail, and Transport for Wales are collaborating to promote level crossing safety through public demonstrations and school visits.
