The Wallis Annenberg Wildlife Crossing, a conservation project spanning the 101 Freeway in Southern California, is nearing completion. Designed to reconnect habitats in the Santa Monica Mountains for mountain lions and other wildlife, the structure is 210 feet long and 174 feet wide. Construction is being executed in two stages. The first stage, involving the vegetated bridge over the 101 Freeway, was completed in June 2025. The second stage includes the wildlife crossing over Agoura Road, utility relocations, earthwork, and habitat restoration. While the site remains an active construction zone, the California Natural Resources Agency maintains the project is on track to open to wildlife on December 2. A public ribbon-cutting ceremony and celebration are scheduled for December 2 at King Gillette Ranch. Although some planting and finishing work will continue after the official opening, Agoura Road is expected to undergo weekday closures for bridge work and backfill operations through November 30. Recent updates indicate the total project cost has risen to $114 million—up from an original $92 million projection—due to inflation, labor shortages, and weather delays. The project aims to expand the legacy of the famous mountain lion P-22 by restoring 13 acres of habitat and recreating migration paths between the Santa Monica Mountains and the Simi Hills. The public ceremony at King Gillette Ranch will require paid admission: $10 for individuals aged 13 and older, and $5 for children 12 and under.
