Walmart is advancing its logistics through a combination of warehouse robotics and drone delivery services. The company is working to automate nearly 200 U.S. logistics centers by deploying small robots equipped with motion sensors to navigate distribution centers. This effort follows previous difficulties in automating complex tasks such as ‘breakpack’, where issues like oversized packaging and mechanical failures occurred. In tandem with warehouse automation, Walmart is expanding its drone delivery partnership with Alphabet subsidiary Wing. The collaboration plans to extend unmanned aerial delivery to the Denver and Seattle metropolitan areas by 2027, testing the technology in diverse climates. The service, which currently reaches approximately three million customers, aims to eventually serve over 40 million people nationwide by delivering lightweight items like groceries and pharmaceuticals at speeds up to 60 mph. To support these transitions, Walmart is investing billions to move from manual labor toward automated systems. The drone service, already active in markets such as Atlanta and Dallas, is designed to carry payloads of up to 5 pounds, including electronics and over-the-counter medications. This expansion places Walmart in direct competition with Amazon as the retailer scales its last-mile logistics capabilities.
