Walmart is undergoing a large-scale effort to automate its supply chain, converting approximately 200 facilities serving 5,200 US stores into automated hubs. Rob Montgomery, head of US supply chain operations, described the process as being at a “peak of complexity.” Initial implementation faced several operational hurdles. Technical difficulties included robots struggling to pick individual items, shuttle robots veering off course, and issues handling bulky or heavy items. Unforeseen problems such as dust accumulation, unreliable transport units, and improper box dimensions also required manual intervention. Despite these challenges, the company stated no layoffs are planned for its 140,000 warehouse workers, opting instead to manage staffing through natural attrition. Walmart has since expanded its partnership with Symbotic, committing approximately $6 billion to implement automation across 25 US regional distribution centers. This collaboration utilizes AI-driven software and integrated systems systems, such as BreakPack each-picking and SymMicro micro-fulfillment, to optimize case movement, increase storage capacity, and improve e-commerce inventory management. Financial data indicates Walmart is a major driver for Symbotic, accounting for 90.5% of the company’s revenue in the quarter ending June 27, 2026.
