Warner Bros. released the legacy sequel ‘Practical Magic 2’ as the studio faces its most significant box office slump in 25 years. In 2026, the company has struggled to produce any film exceeding a $100 million domestic gross, a trend dating back to 2001. This period of underperformance follows the release of ‘The End of Oak Street’, which earned $51.7 million domestically against an $80 million budget. The film features returning stars Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman, produced by the leads alongside Denise Di Novi. Directed by Susanne Bier, the production shifted settings from Washington State to various historic locations in ~~England.~~ England, including extensive set reconstruction at Leavesden Studios. The sequel, also referred to as ‘Practical Magic 2: Love Spell’, features a new cast including Joey King and Maisie Williams. Set 28 years after the original 1998 movie, the plot follows the Owens family as they deal with a resurfacing curse. Critics have noted that while the film captures a nostalgic atmosphere, it may struggle to replicate the emotional weight of the original by focusing more heavily on the storyline of Kylie, played by King. Critical reception has been mixed; while the film holds a 36% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes, it has maintained a 90% audience score. Financially, the film has earned approximately $100 million globally against a $75 million production budget, a figure that may result in a net loss once advertising costs are factored in.
