Warren Buffett, the 96-year-old chairman of Berkshire Hathaway, has announced his decision to step down from the chairmanship, effective immediately. This move completes a long-planned leadership transition for the trillion-dollar conglomerate. Buffett will assume the role of chairman emeritus while remaining a member of the company’s board of directors. Howard Buffett, Warren’s 71-year-old son, will succeed him as chairman. Under the new structure, Howard will has served on the Berkshire Hathaway board since 1993 and is expected to focus on overseeing the company’s culture and values, while values as a non-executive chairman. Greg Abel, who became CEO earlier this year, will continue to manage the company’s daily operations. Susan Decker will continue her role as the lead independent director. In a letter to shareholders, Buffett noted that “Father Time always wins,” but expressed high confidence in the leadership of both Abel and Howard. This transition follows Buffett’s departure from the CEO role late last year.
