Wildfire crisis and arson investigations intense heatwaves in the Balkans
The wildfire crisis across the Balkan Peninsula continues to cause significant environmental and economic damage. In Montenegro, the situation is stabilizing as authorities report all active fires are under control, aided by recent rainfall in areas such as Herceg Novi and Kotor. While fires in Herceg Novi, Danilovgrad, and Kolašin are currently under control, high caution remains due to dry vegetation and high temperatures. In Croatia, firefighting efforts remain widespread. While several blazes in Zadar County, including those on Dug Otok and the Nin Shores, have been extinguished, a fire in the Dinara region remains active. In Mursko Središće, local authorities have threatened to revoke municipal financial benefits for residents involved in illegal waste burning following several fires in the Sitnice settlement. Investigations into potential arson in the Zadar area have previously led to the arrest of four individuals. In Bosnia and Herzegovina, a large fire near Ljubuša, close to Tomislavgrad, has affected approximately 1,800 hectares. This has caused severe losses for the beekeeping industry, with many beehives destroyed or damaged by intense smoke and heat; assessments of the full extent of these losses are ongoing. Additionally, fires have been reported in various locations across the Herceg-Bosna Canton, including Mostar, Čapljina, and Konjic. In Serbia, the crisis has expanded with firefighters battling multiple hotspots, including the Deliblatska Peščara and the Stolovi mountain area. Reports indicate at least one fatality resulting from a fire in Smederevo. Recent meteorological warnings indicate the crisis is being exacerbated by extreme weather. Serbia faces a severe heatwave from August 20 to August 25, with temperatures potentially reaching 42 degrees Celsius in central and southern regions. In Croatia, high temperatures and south winds persist, with active fires reported in Dinara and Brač.
