Waste facility fires and industrial accidents in South Korea

Overview

In late September, a fire occurred at a waste recycling center in Namyangju, Gyeonggi Province. Firefighting authorities deployed 39 personnel and 18 pieces of equipment to manage the blaze. While no casualties were reported, officials advised residents to keep windows closed due to significant smoke.

By late October, a fire broke out at a waste processing company in Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju. This incident prompted a Level 1 response involving 92 personnel and 38 pieces of equipment. Local authorities issued emergency alerts for residents to avoid the area and for vehicles to detour around the site.

The Gwangju fire coincided with several other accidents in the Jeonnam and Gwangju regions, including a village bus fire in Nam-gu, a fatal forklift accident in Yeosu, and an electric shock incident in Wando.
