Waste management and pollution fire incidents in Romania

Waste management and pollution issues have emerged in different regions of Romania. In the Sintești area of Vidra commune, the Ministry of Environment, Waters and Forests requested a state of alert due to persistent illegal waste burning. Interim Minister Diana Buzoianu characterized the location as a “chronic pollution hotspot” that continues to impact air quality in Ilfov and Bucharest despite numerous previous interventions and fines. Separately, in Sibiu County, a large-scale fire occurred at a waste sorting and recycling facility in the Rusciori area. The blaze consumed hundreds of square meters of plastic and PET materials, prompting RO-ALERT warnings to residents in Șura Mică and Sibiu due to dense, toxic smoke. Emergency teams utilized specialized firefighting units and CBRN equipment, while mobile laboratories from the National Environmental Guard monitored air quality, detecting elevated levels of PM10 suspended particles. Officials noted that a lack of wind prevented the smoke from drifting toward the city of Sibiu, and no residential areas were within a one-kilometer radius of the facility. Additionally, In addition to waste-related incidents, several other significant fires have been reported. In Suceava, a major fire was reported in the Burdujeni neighborhood of Suceava. The blaze affected destroyed approximately 400 square meters of a wooden roof and attic structure in an apartment building, threatening fourth-floor apartments and nearby properties. Authorities suggested the fire may have been likely caused by the improper use of a heating device during insulation work; no casualties were reported. this led to the temporary relocation of residents. In Retezat National Park, a forest fire in the Valea Buta area prompted the Hunedoara County Committee for Emergency Situations to approve an integrated action plan involving air quality monitoring and restricted tourist access.
