Speculation regarding midfielder Wataru Endo’s departure from Liverpool FC has intensified during the summer transfer window. Early reports indicated that the club was prepared to accept offers for the 33-year-old to avoid him leaving on a free transfer when his contract expires. Potential suitors mentioned in media reports included Wolverhampton Wanderers, Fulham, and West Ham United. While Endo recently returned to competitive action following ankle surgery, reports suggest he is not part of the long-term plans under new management. In September 2026, manager Andoni Iraola omitted senior players Federico Chiesa and Wataru Endo from the club’s 25-man squad for the UEFA Champions League league phase to comply with UEFA registration regulations regarding homegrown players. While Endo remains registered for Premier League competition, he has yet to appear in any official matches this season, including Premier League and domestic cup fixtures. Manager Andoni Iraola has cited intense competition in midfield—specifically mentioning players like Ryan Gravenberch and Dominik Szoboszlai—as well as injury recovery as reasons for the lack of minutes. Following a goalless draw with Fulham on September 27, 2026, Iraola confirmed that Endo sits lower in the midfield rotation due to increased competition. This shift follows significant squad changes, including the departure of Curtis Jones to Inter Milan. As of late September 2026, local media outlets, including Anfield Index, suggest a January transfer window move would benefit both the player and the club by providing squad flexibility and allowing Endo to secure regular playing time. While his age may limit a significant transfer fee, speculation has emerged regarding a potential return to the J League.
