Efforts to manage water scarcity and infrastructure loss are increasingly relying on technological and economic interventions. In France, local governments have utilized progressive or seasonal pricing to curb consumption, such as in Pillemoine, where increased rates led to a 20 percent reduction in usage within two days. Technological advancements include the development of connected devices by startups like EAU-LINK to monitor real-time consumption and detect leaks. In Central Europe, water utilities are focusing on specialized diagnostics and digitalization to prevent network losses. In the Czech Republic, specialists are using advanced equipment to identify micro-leaks in plastic piping. Meanwhile, in Poland, companies are deploying digital solutions like radio modules for remote meter reading to provide real-time data on flow and pressure. These measures aim to address significant water losses, which have reached as high as 58 percent in certain Polish regions. Utility providers are further expanding the use of digital and wireless smart meters to modernize infrastructure. In Australia, Barwon Water is rolling out digital meters across Geelong, Jan Juc, and Torquay. Early results from residential leak alerts enabled 22 customers to repair hidden leaks, preventing over half a million litres of water loss and saving customers an average of nearly $100 on bills. These meters identify anomalies by monitoring variations in water pressure, consumption, and vibrations. Additionally, the Village of Wellington has launched a Water Meter Replacement Program to replace residential meters with wireless smart technology. This 12-to-18-month initiative, supported by contractor Envocore, aims to improve billing accuracy, eliminate manual readings, and reduce carbon emissions by decreasing vehicle usage.
