Water safety and drowning prevention in Turkey
Overview
Authorities in Turkey have issued various warnings to prevent drowning incidents in different aquatic environments.
In Antalya, lifeguards at Konyaaltı Beach highlighted risks associated with specific wind conditions, such as the Poyraz wind creating dangerous currents and the Lodos wind producing heavy waves. Officials warned that non-swimmers often use inadequate flotation devices and cautioned that drowning victims may be unable to call for help as they prioritize breathing. They also advised against untrained rescue attempts to prevent rescuers from becoming victims.
In the Konya region, the police department’s Underwater Group Command issued warnings regarding drowning risks in dams, lakes, canals, and ponds. Following four drowning incidents in a 1.5-month period, officials advised the public to stick to supervised beaches with safety markers. Recommended emergency measures include using lifebuoys, ropes, or even empty plastic bottles to help victims stay afloat.
