In Banabuiú, Ceará, residents faced significant water shortages after members of the Comando Vermelho criminal faction allegedly began extorting local distributors. The group reportedly demanded weekly fees and required merchants to obtain unauthorized permission to sell and transport mineral water. In response, the Ceará State Government launched an operation involving the Secretariat of Public Security and Social Defense and the water utility company Cagece to transport water under police escort. Three suspects were arrested in connection with the extortion attempts, and authorities are working to identify the individual allegedly responsible for ordering the threats. Recent developments indicate that the shortage caused local educational institutions to temporarily suspend activities and forced residents to form long queues at the Matriz Church Square to access supplies. During police actions, officers seized a .38 caliber revolver, ammunition, mobile phones, a notebook, and cash. The Civil Police have identified a suspected mastermind behind the threats who is reportedly located in Rio de Janeiro. Law enforcement agencies in Ceará are currently working alongside Rio de Janeiro police to locate and arrest this individual. Separately, in Porto Velho, the municipal government launched a humanitarian operation to distribute potable water and sodium hypochlorite to families in the Baixo Madeira region due to a severe drought that has lowered river levels.
