Overview

The Waterloo Regional Police Service has implemented a new network of CCTV and automated licence plate recognition (ALPR) cameras to support investigations. Within the first 44 days of operation, the system was utilized in 19 investigations involving various offenses, including sexual assault, robbery, fraud, and dangerous driving.

The program, which launched in Waterloo on June 23 and expanded to Cambridge and North Dumfries on July 19, currently utilizes 28 cameras across 12 locations. Police reported that the technology has been effective in “verifying witness statements and confirming whether alleged crimes actually occurred.” Further installations are planned for Kitchener, Waterloo, and Cambridge.
