Waymo development of custom autonomous driving chips
Overview
Waymo, an Alphabet subsidiary, has developed a custom 5-nanometer application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) manufactured by TSMC to power its next-generation autonomous vehicle platform, Project Ojai.
The custom silicon is designed for real-time sensor fusion, processing data from 13 cameras, four lidars, and six radars. The hardware delivers over 1,000 trillion operations per second (TOPS) of machine learning performance, enabling decision-making in less than 10 milliseconds. To ensure safety, the system utilizes a redundant, liquid-cooled architecture where two ASICs operate in parallel.
This move toward vertical integration aims to reduce latency and lower manufacturing and maintenance costs. While the custom chip handles latency-critical sensor processing, Waymo will continue to use third-party components from partners including Nvidia, AMD, Samsung, and Micron for other computing needs.
