Japan continues to experience significant temperature fluctuations and unseasonably warm autumn weather. While Tokyo recently set a record for the longest streak of summer-like days in October, the country has seen extreme variations between morning and afternoon temperatures. Weather conditions have deteriorated due to a low-pressure system and a stationary front. Heavy rain, thunderstorms, and strong winds are expected across several regions. The Hokuriku region, including Niigata, Toyama, Ishikawa, and Fukui, faces significant risks of flooding in low-lying areas and rising river levels, with 24-hour precipitation forecasts reaching 120mm in Ishikawa and 100mm in Toyama. In the Kinki and Tokai regions, residents are warned of sudden heavy thunderstorms, lightning, and the potential for tornadoes through the morning of October 20. On October 21, Toyama Prefecture experienced record-breaking late summer heat. Five locations recorded ‘manatsubi’ (summer-like temperatures) exceeding 30°C, driven by warm air flowing from the Pacific High toward a low-pressure system in the Sea of Japan. Toyama City (30.4°C) and Uozu City (30.2°C) set new records for the latest summer-like days in their histories, surpassing previous records from 1951 and 1994. Akigashima recorded 31.7°C, and Nanto City reached 30.3°C. The Toyama Local Meteorological Observatory warned that stagnant rain clouds could lead to heavy rainfall reaching warning levels. Extreme heat remains a critical concern. In Tokyo, the metropolitan government has released the ‘2026 Summer HTT’ newsletter to prepare for anticipated power supply shortages and temperatures exceeding 40°C. Regarding maritime activity, Typhoon 30, described as a ‘large and very strong storm,’ is moving near the Philippines. By October 22, significant seasonal shifts emerged as strong cold air brought the season’s first heavy snowfall to high-altitude areas in Hokkaido, including Mikuni Pass and Nissho Pass. First snow has also been officially observed in Wakkanai and Asahikawa.
