Weather patterns in Sanxenxo, Spain

Overview

Weather patterns in the Sanxenxo region and across Spain shifted from warm, clear conditions in mid-August to significant atmospheric instability by late August 2026.

In mid-August, Sanxenxo and Calamonte experienced clear skies and warm temperatures, with Calamonte reaching highs of 38 degrees Celsius. By August 25, forecasts for Sanxenxo and Valdoviño indicated a shift toward mostly cloudy skies and a 100% probability of light rain.

Regional instability intensified on August 25 as an Atlantic front and a low-pressure system moved toward the Bay of Biscay. This brought rain and potential storms to the northwest, including northeastern Galicia and Asturias, with some areas facing “yellow-level warnings for storms and hail.” Specifically, Porto do Son prepared for high instability, including wind gusts up to 83 km/h.

This northern instability contrasted with persistent heat in the Mediterranean and southern regions. Valencia and the Balearic Islands expected temperatures exceeding 35 degrees Celsius. In Madrid, temperatures remained relatively moderate, staying mostly below 30 degrees through the end of the week before trending upward.

By August 25, AEMET reported a widening contrast in Spanish weather, noting heavy storms and hail in Galicia and the Pyrenees, while temperatures exceeded 35 degrees Celsius in the Ebro valley and La Rioja. Madrid and Cuenca also faced increased instability and temperature fluctuations.

Additionally, AEMET addressed a recent meteotsunami phenomenon on the Valencian coast, noting that sudden sea level changes in Jávea were caused by rapid atmospheric pressure variations rather than seismic activity. This phenomenon, or ‘rissaga’, resulted in rapid sea-level fluctuations of up to 70cm along the Costa Blanca.
