Weather patterns in Spain have transitioned from general atmospheric stability toward significant meteorological instability. Following a period of warmth and high humidity in early September, conditions shifted on September 9, 2026, toward increased volatility. In response to incoming storms, torrential rains, and high winds, the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) activated orange alerts for several municipalities in the province of Alicante, specifically targeting the southern coast and Vega Baja del Segura. These warnings highlight risks of flooding, hail, and intense wind gusts, with potential rainfall accumulations reaching up to 40 liters per square meter in a single hour. In response to these risks, local authorities have implemented preventive measures. Torrevieja has ordered the closure of parks and gardens and the suspension of all outdoor activities and sports, while Almoradí has closed municipal sports facilities and cemeteries. In the Murcia region, heavy rains have already resulted in nearly 250 emergency calls, primarily concerning flooding and traffic obstructions. Instability is also affecting Catalonia, the Balearic Islands, and parts of Andalusia and Murcia. In Catalonia, storms may reach torrential intensity, while the Balearic Islands face alerts for wind, storms, and coastal phenomena. In Menorca, alerts have been issued for torrential rain and strong gusts of up to 90 km/h. In Mallorca, wind gusts have been recorded up to 88 km/h in Capdepera, with disruptions reported at Palma airport. Although some areas, such as Sabadell, experienced lighter rainfall than initially anticipated, the overall situation remains volatile, characterized by intense, irregular precipitation and significant temperature fluctuations.
