The European mobile payment landscape is transitioning from regional services like France’s Paylib to Wero, a pan-European instant-payment solution developed by the European Payments Initiative (EPI). Wero aims to provide a European alternative to US-based providers such as PayPal, Apple Pay, and Visa to reinforce digital sovereignty. Following its initial launch in Belgium and Germany in 2024, the platform has expanded through acquisitions of Currence iDEAL and Payconiq International. The service is being integrated into various banking infrastructures; for instance, the neobank N26 has officially rolled out Wero to its customers in France and Germany. Integrated directly within the N26 mobile application, the service utilizes the SEPA Instant credit transfer scheme to allow users to send money instantly 24/7 using only a recipient's mobile number or email address. In the retail sector, Lidl has expanded its integration of the platform in Germany. While previously focused on facilitating faster product returns, Lidl’s online shop now accepts Wero for transactions via banking apps or QR code scanning using SEPA instant credit transfers. However, Wero is not yet accepted for in-store purchases at Lidl discounters. Two years after its launch, Wero faces significant challenges regarding consumer awareness and adoption. A survey by Verivox and Innofact involving 1,002 respondents indicates that only 39 percent of German adults correctly identify Wero as a payment service, while 31 percent have never heard of it. Furthermore, Actual usage remains low, with approximately 7 percent of respondents having used the system. While a slight majority of 18- to 29-year-olds (53 percent) believe in the project's long-term success, approximately 58 percent of total respondents expressed doubt that Wero will become Europe’s most popular payment service, highlighting a gap between technical availability and widespread usage. service.
