Overview

In late July 2026, newly appointed UK Defence Secretary Wes Streeting, who had just moved from health to defence, reiterated his view that Israel was committing war crimes in Gaza and branded it a “rogue state”. At the same time, investigations disclosed that Streeting had accepted more than £50,000 in donations from individuals and firms linked to the Israeli defence industry and the US data‑analytics company Palantir.

LLT’s founder, David Lawrence, had previously accepted a significant gift from disgraced cryptocurrency entrepreneur Sam Bankman‑Fried—reported as £500,000 in some accounts and $675,000 in others—shortly before the think-tank made its political contributions.

Streeting’s office maintained that due-diligence was conducted, no link to the fraudster was found, and all donations were properly declared. Streeting stated he unreservedly condemned Bankman‑Fried’s actions and had no knowledge of any criminal activity. However, the controversy has intensified as political figures, including Shadow Chancellor Alex Burghart and Reform UK chair Lee Anderson, have called for investigations. The situation has raised ongoing concerns regarding transparency and the potential for unincorporated associations to serve as conduits for opaque political funding.
