Overview

Efforts to strengthen investigative journalism regarding financial crimes have expanded from national initiatives in Nigeria to regional programs across West Africa.

In Nigeria, the Africa Network for Environment and Economic Justice (ANEEJ) held a workshop in Akwa Ibom State to train journalists and civil society organizations on combating illicit financial flows. The program, supported by the European Union, focused on addressing corruption, money laundering, and tax evasion, which officials noted divert resources from essential public services.

Following this, the Inter-Governmental Action Group Against Money Laundering in West Africa (GIABA) conducted a regional training program in Ghana. This initiative involved journalists from 12 ECOWAS member countries and three Alliance of Sahel States countries. The training aimed to improve reporting on money laundering and terrorist financing, with officials emphasizing the need for journalists to ‘follow the money’ by examining corporate structures and digital financial services to promote transparency.
