West African Regional Water Forum

Overview

The inaugural West African Regional Water Forum (FREAO 2026) was held in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire, to address the management of 28 hydrographic basins serving approximately 500 million people. Under the theme ‘Valorizing water to transform West Africa’, the forum brought together regional leaders, ministers, and technical partners to promote Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) and transboundary cooperation.

During the event, Ivorian Prime Minister Robert Beugré Mambé noted that water management should serve as a tool for peace and trust between states. Additionally, Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye and Ivorian President Alassane Ouattara received the Special Trophy of the West African Water Prize for their leadership in sustainable water governance.

The forum concluded with the adoption of the Abidjan Declaration, which calls for strengthened regional cooperation and increased investment mobilization. This declaration seeks to establish a unified West African position prior to the 2026 United Nations Water Conference in Abu Dhabi. The next forum is planned for Praia, Cabo Verde.
