Neria Leiter, an IDF reservist and the son of Israel’s Ambassador to the United States, Yechiel Leiter, was critically injured in a car-ramming attack in the West Bank. The incident occurred near the Maccabim checkpoint on Route 443, where Leiter was serving on a joint police-IDF patrol. Israeli security forces shot and killed the attacker, identified by the Palestinian Health Ministry as 29-year-old Mahmoud Mohammad Mahmoud Suleiman. Following the attack, Israeli forces tightened security and closed several checkpoints in the Ramallah and Al-Bireh governorates. Leiter was evacuated to Shaare Zedek Medical Center in Jerusalem for emergency brain surgery to treat serious head injuries. His condition was reported as critical and life-threatening. Ambassador Leiter, who returned to Israel following the incident, stated, “Neria needs a miracle.” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ~~also~~ and President Isaac Herzog have both expressed support and prayers for the family. The attack follows a period of personal tragedy for the Leiter family; Neria’s older brother, Major Moshe Yedidya Leiter, was killed while serving in Gaza in November 2023. Neria had continued his reserve service following his brother's death.
