Overview

The West Bengal government introduced the Annapurna Yojana, a welfare scheme replacing the Lakshmi Bhandar scheme to provide Rs 3,000 in monthly financial aid to women. By mid-August, the government initiated fund transfers to approximately 14.5 million eligible women, with the disbursement process expected to run from August 17 to August 20. To fund the program, the state increased its annual budget allocation from Rs 36,000 crore to Rs 48,000 crore.

While application numbers rose significantly during the launch period, approximately 1.7 million applications were rejected, largely due to discrepancies between application names and Aadhaar records.
