In late July 2026, intense wildfires in western France and the Madrid‑Ávila region of Spain burned hundreds of thousands of hectares and forced evacuation of roughly 270,000 residents. Satellite data showed the resulting smoke plume traveling westward across the Atlantic, merging emissions from both countries, and later being observed over Greece at altitudes above 2 km. By 28 July, the same plume had moved eastward, reaching Germany where fine smoke particles scattered sunlight and produced unusually vivid red‑orange sunsets. Observers in German regions reported the striking “glowing” skies as a visual reminder of the trans‑national air‑quality impacts.
Later that day, the National Observatory of Athens confirmed that the combined French and Spanish smoke continued its eastward drift, still aloft and not yet causing direct health effects in Greece.
On 29 July the EU Emergency Response Coordination Centre warned that the season was shaping up as one of the worst on record. Fires persisted across Spain, France, Greece and Italy, prompting evacuations of more than 90 000 people in Spain and about 260 000 in France, and resulting in two firefighter fatalities in Rethymno, Greece. The EU deployed multiple aircraft and helicopters to assist national firefighting efforts, while Copernicus data indicated over 200 000 ha already burned in Spain and projected roughly 1 200 forest fires for the year, double the usual average.
