Developmental initiatives in Western Macedonia are focusing on green transition and innovation through regional and academic projects. A 7 million euro project under the ‘Just Transition 2021-2027’ program was approved to establish an Innovation Zone featuring six specialized ‘Living Labs’. These laboratories, located in areas such as Ptolemaida, Florina, and Kozani, are designed to allow various stakeholders to test technologies in sectors including cleantech, agri-food, and energy infrastructure resilience. In parallel, the University of Western Macedonia is seeking government assistance to implement a broader investment program exceeding 268 million euros. This plan includes over 50 projects, such as new student residences and a School of Fine Arts, with the goal of establishing the institution as a European leader in green applied research and digital sovereignty. The university is prioritizing collaborations to advance energy transition and productive transformation within the region. Expanding on these transition efforts, the Region of Western Macedonia has announced a €12.135 million residential energy upgrade program funded by the Just Transition Fund. The initiative aims to reduce household energy costs and phase out reliance on conventional fuels like oil by focusing on the mandatory installation of air-to-water or geothermal heat pumps. Beneficiaries may also access upgrades for thermal insulation, hot water systems, and photovoltaic self-generation with energy storage. Subsidies are tiered by income, potentially reaching 100% for certain upgrades, with special consideration for low-income and vulnerable households in areas lacking district heating or natural gas networks. Applications are scheduled to open electronically from September 28 until November 23, 2026. To support the rollout of the heat pump initiative, the Regional Development Fund, in collaboration with the Technical Chamber of Greece – Western Macedonia Branch, is conducting a series of information sessions. This regional tour is scheduled to begin in Ptolemaida on September 15, 2026, followed by events in Grevena (September 18), Kozani (September 22), Kastoria (September 28), and Florina (September 30).
