Western United States drought and wildfire conditions

Overview

Drought conditions in the Western United States have shown signs of recession due to autumn rainfall and monsoon moisture. In the Pacific Northwest, cooler and wetter weather has eased extreme and exceptional drought levels in Oregon, Idaho, and Washington.

In Colorado, recent precipitation has reduced the combined area of extreme and exceptional drought, though the state remains largely under drought conditions with only 6 percent of the area currently drought-free. While monsoon moisture has provided some relief to firefighters by increasing humidity, it has not significantly replenished reservoirs, which remain below average capacity.

In Utah, the 2026 wildfire season has been identified as one of the most severe since 2007, with over 500,000 acres burned. These high-elevation burns, driven by record-low snowpacks, have also increased flood risks for downstream communities.
