Whale migration shifts and ocean warming in East Greenland
Research indicates a major ecological regime shift along the East Greenland coast driven by rising ocean temperatures and receding sea ice. As melting glaciers open previously inaccessible coastal waters, large baleen whale species are migrating into the region to take advantage of an abundance of prey, such as capelin and krill. Studies combining aerial surveys, satellite tracking, and Inuit hunter observations show a dramatic increase in sightings. For instance, humpback whale sightings rose from zero in 2006 to over 150 in 2024. During the summer of 2024, estimates suggest approximately 4,000 humpback, 6,000 bowhead, and 6,000 minke whales visited the Greenland Sea. Newer research utilizing narwhals equipped with sensors has identified a mechanism for this warming. Data collected between 2017 and 2020 reveals that warm, salty Atlantic water is penetrating deep into East Greenland's fjords, reaching as far as 300 kilometers from the coast. This discovery, published in Science Advances, suggests a hidden pathway through which ocean heat reaches glacier fronts, potentially accelerating underwater melting. Professor Mads Peter Heide-Jørgensen of the Greenland Institute of Natural Resources has described these changes as among the most profound seen in the subarctic zone. While the influx of predators provides new feeding opportunities, scientists warn that these shifts shifts, driven by fossil fuel-driven warming, could trigger significant changes throughout the Arctic marine food web.
