Whale shark deaths in Indonesia

Overview

Recent reports indicate the deaths of whale sharks in different Indonesian regions. In Bali, an eight-meter male whale shark was found dead in the Jembrana Regency. Following inspections by agencies including the Balai Besar Riset Budidaya Laut dan Penyuluhan Perikanan (BBRBLPP) Gondol and Jaringan Satwa Indonesia (JSI), the carcass was buried to mitigate public health and environmental risks.

In Southeast Sulawesi, a 9.17-meter whale shark weighing approximately 5 tons stranded on Matahora Beach in Wakatobi. Despite rescue attempts by Wakatobi National Park, local police, and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) to keep the animal moist, it died shortly after discovery. Authorities faced challenges evacuating the carcass due to shallow waters and extreme heat, scheduling removal for high tide to prevent pollution from decomposition.
