Meta previously attributed these incidents to internal errors in its blocking systems and the use of unofficial clients like WhatsApp Plus. On 27 August 2026, Meta clarified that mass account blocks in Indonesia were caused by a “global system error” during an update to its illegal activity detection mechanisms. Esther Samboh, Head of Public Policy for WhatsApp and Messenger in Asia Pacific, stated the issue was a technical error rather than a coordinated effort targeting specific regions. Following widespread complaints, Indonesia’s Ministry of Communication and Digital (Komdigi) sought formal explanations from ~~Meta, noting they had been in communication with~~ Meta.
