WhatsApp is expanding its service changes to include new monetization policies for commercial users alongside ongoing operating system updates. Starting October 1, 2026, Meta will introduce charges for specific messages sent via the WhatsApp Business Platform. This policy affects companies utilizing APIs, chatbots, and CRM integrations for automated notifications and customer service. While personal messaging remains free, businesses will be restricted to 1,000 free service messages per month per phone number; exceeding this limit will result in per-message charges. In tandem with these financial changes, technical requirements continue to evolve. Following the end of support for Android 5.0 and 5.1, Android users must utilize at least Android 6.0 to maintain access. For iPhone users, the requirement is set to increase to iOS 15.5 starting December 1, 2026. Meta maintains that these shifts are necessary to “improve data encryption, security, and to support advanced features like high-definition video calls and artificial intelligence.” Affected hardware includes legacy models such as the iPhone 5 and 6 series, as well as older Samsung, LG, Sony, and Motorola handsets. Recent developments include the implementation of a server-side update that restricts access for users on outdated operating systems. This update triggers a mandatory, non-bypassable warning screen directing users to install the latest available system updates. This measure aims to address security vulnerabilities, as outdated software may contain flaws that allow malicious programs to access data before encryption or after decryption, potentially compromising the security chain despite end-to-end encryption. The rollout of this restriction is being conducted gradually, affecting selected accounts and devices.
