White rhinoceros conservation transfer to Mexico

Overview

As part of an international conservation program, four white rhinoceroses—three females and one male—are being transferred from European institutions to the Guadalajara Zoo in Jalisco, Mexico. The initiative, coordinated by the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA) and the Association of Zoos, Breeders and Aquariums of Mexico (Azcarm), aims to strengthen genetic diversity and support reproduction efforts to prevent extinction risks.

The group includes Salma (5) and Moana (9) from Serengeti-Park Hodenhagen in Germany, and Lewa (4) and Wami (15) from France. This relocation marks the first time white rhinoceroses have been moved from Europe to Mexico under the European Endangered Species Programme (EEP).

On October 21, 2026, the German rhinos, Salma and Moana, arrived in Mexico following a flight from Paris. Ingo Schmidinger, the zoological director of Serengeti-Park, accompanied the animals during transit to monitor their condition. They join Wami and Lewa to form a new breeding group in a specially constructed facility in Guadalajara.

Wami, weighing 2,400 kilograms, was transported via a 12-hour chartered cargo flight from Paris. Alexis Lécu, scientific director of the Paris Zoo, noted that because European breeding programs are currently saturated—with 326 rhinoceroses across 83 parks—moving Wami to the Americas is a strategic effort to maintain genetic capital in a region where his ancestors are not present.

Upon arrival, the animals undergo quarantine, veterinary assessment, and adaptation. The white rhinoceros is currently classified as ‘near threatened’ by the IUCN, with an estimated 16,000 to 17,000 individuals remaining in the wild.
