The white truffle season began in Istria, Croatia, with a focus on securing European Union protection for the product’s designation of origin to safeguard its gastronomic identity and market value. However, the market has since faced significant scarcity due to extreme summer heat and prolonged drought. In Italy’s Piedmont region, low yields have driven retail prices as high as 550 euros per 100 grams. Similarly, producers in Germany report low harvests caused by high temperatures and insufficient canopy cover, forcing restaurateurs to rely heavily on external supplies. Market fluctuations are further influenced by geopolitical conflicts and shifting international export demands. Recent reports from Italy indicate that extreme heat and drought continue to impact the start of the season for Tuber magnatum Pico. In key areas such as Central Italy and near Alba in Piedmont, yields have been disappointing, with many available specimens being notably small. While scarcity has pushed prices toward approximately 500 euros per 100 grams, truffle broker Antonio Leo suggests that costs may decrease if weather conditions improve during October and November. Despite the cautious outlook, the city of Alba is moving forward with its International Truffle Fair, scheduled from October 10 to December 6. The event is expected to attract around 600,000 visitors, as experts remain hopeful for higher-quality finds later in the season.
