Overview

The World Health Organization (WHO) released a report synthesizing 25 years of scientific evidence regarding the impact of tobacco use on reproductive health. The findings indicate that tobacco use significantly reduces pregnancy chances for both men and women.

For women, current smokers face a 40% higher risk of infertility compared to non-smokers. The report notes that tobacco chemicals can damage eggs and affect uterine health, while also reducing the success rates of assisted reproduction methods like in vitro fertilization. However, women who have quit smoking may see a 25% lower risk of infertility compared to current smokers.

In men, a review of 44 studies involving over 60,000 participants linked smoking to sperm abnormalities, reduced sperm count and motility, and sexual dysfunctions such as erectile dysfunction and ejaculation difficulties. The WHO also highlighted that secondhand smoke poses similar reproductive health risks.
