WHYY acquisition of WPSU public media
Overview
Following a decision by the Penn State Board of Trustees to shut down WPSU in September 2025, a deal was reached in October 2025 to sell the broadcaster to WHYY Philadelphia. In September 2026, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) approved the transfer of WPSU-TV and WPSU-FM broadcast licenses from Penn State University to WHYY.
WHYY intends to operate the stations under the existing WPSU name and call signs to maintain a “strong, independent and noncommercial public media voice” for the approximately 1.5 million residents in central and northern Pennsylvania.
In October 2026, WHYY appointed Fred Vigeant as the new general manager of WPSU. Vigeant, formerly a vice president at WITF in Harrisburg, is tasked with overseeing the station’s television, radio, and digital services.
