Authorities in Germany and Poland are reporting significant increases in wild boar populations, leading to various management challenges. In the Bernkastel-Wittlich district of Germany, officials have noted that rising numbers present an “exceptional challenge” for hunters. The surge has caused wildlife damage and raised concerns regarding the potential outbreak of African Swine Fever. To address this, authorities are calling for the use of all legal hunting measures and a reduction in restrictions that might impede control efforts. In Poland, municipalities such as Bytom and Sułkowice are experiencing disturbances due to urban migration. In Bytom, authorities recorded 173 interventions through August, citing a lack of natural predators and human food access as contributing factors. In Sułkowice, local leadership has convened meetings with police and hunting clubs to coordinate safety procedures and discuss increasing reductionary hunting to protect residents and property. This trend of urban encroachment has expanded into Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia. In Banja Luka, experts attribute the movement of boars into peri-urban areas to habitat destruction, urban expansion, and easier access to human waste. Similarly, on the Croatian island of Ist, boars are roaming through villages and rooting in gardens, causing concern for the local elderly population. Recent hunting statistics for the 2025/2026 period highlight the scale of the issue in Central Europe. In the Czech Republic’s Vysočina Region, hunters recorded a record 22,606 kills, a 45.4 percent increase from the previous year. In Croatia, the Bureau of Statistics reported a 49.5 percent increase in wild boar culling compared to the previous year, with 67,857 animals killed. Disruptions have now reached major metropolitan areas. In Berlin, authorities ordered a hunt at the Ruhleben cemetery following extensive damage to graves and green spaces; the grounds were closed to visitors to ensure safety during the operation.
